Many recently built homes in Chicago feature radiant heat in the lower level.  What can you do to make sure you get the most out of your radiant heat when you have carpet installed?  First, if it is a new construction home, you can save some money if you make sure that the floor along the perimeter is protected when the baseboards are painted.  Why?  If paint gets on the floor than that concrete floor needs to be scraped clean before carpet is installed so that the tack strip can be properly glued to the floor. The tack strip needs to be glued instead of nailed so the radiant heat tubing isn’t punctured during installation.  Usually an installation of carpet will take two days when you have radiant heating.

The first day will be gluing down the tack strip.  The single most important choice you will make for your basement carpeting if you have radiant heat is the pad you select.  Rubber pad allows the heat to transfer from the carpet better than any other type of padding.  While rubber pad costs more than other types of carpet padding, it is inherently anti-microbial and provides a great feel underfoot.  At Home Carpet One, we offer two different types of rubber padding.
